As you bring in the final harvests before any possible frosts, we have books on pickling/fermenting, jam making and root cellaring if needed. 

And if you need inspiration for the pie baking contest at Apple Fest this Sunday (at the Homestead), we have a few books featuring pie making.

Thanks to Mike Hebb, we now have a picnic table in our back field for all to enjoy ----- a quiet place to read, play, have a picnic.

The Thursday after-school program will begin next week, Sept. 22. We are hopeful the Brook Rd. bridge will be open and the school bus schedule will be back to
normal. However, we will run that date even if the bus doesn't arrive at the library till 3:45. 
The after-school program is for K -  5th graders. Kids can take the school bus to the library (please send a note to the classroom teacher). We provide a simple snack,  read-aloud time

Have you noticed that a treasured item has been missing from the library? The large portrait of Justin Morrill, painted by Constantino Brumidi is no longer in its place above the mantle. 

The Trustees had an opportunity to send the painting to Barry Bauman, a retired conservator who now only works for non-profits and does not charge for his time. He  has worked on other Brumidi paintings and studied at a land grant college, both factors that led him to accept Morrill’s portrait for restorati...

The after-school program is starting this Thursday, September 18, from 3:15 - 4:15. This program is for school aged children (we hope to offer Storytime for pre-schoolers, if there is enough interest). Children can take the school bus to the library, as long as a note is sent in to their teacher, and pick up time is 4:15.

So far, 23 students have started Summer Reading Logs ---- a great start! Students can start them any time and record the books they've read over the summer. We keep the logs at the library, so they don't get lost, but many students find it helpful to keep a list at home so they don't forget the titles when they come in to fill out their "official" log here. We encourage all students to keep a log and read for pure pleasure over the summer, so come in and start one anytime!

Also, a gentle reminder: please return DVDs in a timely fashion!
The circulation time for DVDs (and magazines) is one week. Returning them asap
is especially important for newer DVDs, which often have  a waiting list, and for 
LUV DVDs, which we we have for two months (so, if someone keeps one for three or four weeks,

The after-school program will start next Thursday, September 13.
(yes, we know it's Tunbridge Fair) ......... with a slight change:
the program will run from 3:15 - 4:15, instead of 4:30. We hope this isn't an
inconvenience, but Emily needs to leave in a timely fashion and we have been finding 
that after an hour, most kids are ready for something else. So, please pick up at 4:15.

admits 2 people. You can borrow one or both at the same time.

Audio and movie problems:
We are still missing a couple of LUV DVD's: "The Soloist" and "Venice

these asap. They will have a blue label on the spine, which says "LUV VIDEO

The children's and young adult audiobooks we are able to purchase (thanks to

FINALLY --------- we have scheduled two sessions to showcase all the services
available to you through the
Green Mountain Library Consortium:

 MANGO - the internet based, foreign language learning program, teaching
conversational language and cultural awareness.

Our "After School" program will start up again this Thursday, Sept. 22!
Students can take the bus directly from Newton School, right to the library
----- please send in a note with your child notifying the school that they will
be headed here. Read aloud, snacks (donations always welcome) and activities,
from 3:15 - 4:30 (please pick up promptly). Call 765-4037 if you have any

Saturday: (rescheduled) Summer Reading Log Celebration ----- 9 am. If your

For the children who participated in our "Summer Reading Log" program, we have
rescheduled the celebration for Saturday, Sept. 10 (a week from tomorrow)
at 9am, to honor all of them. We are delighted to report that 25 kids
participated (new kindergartners to 6th graders) and read a total of 213 books!
We are amazed and proud of them ------ we hope they will all come by the
library on Sept. 10th for our short celebration. The Friends of the Morrill

We are in the planning stages for events for the "VERMONT READS" program, and
will post dates as soon as we schedule them. Meanwhile, come in and pick up a copy of
"To Kill a Mockingbird"so you can start reading.

Oliver Munson (7th grader) wants to start a Dungeons & Dragons group, to meet
at the library on Mondays from 3:30 - 5pm. He needs four people to start a group ------ please call him at 765-4196 to let him know if you're interested.

A reminder that the library will be CLOSED next Monday, Feb. 21, for the
President's Day holiday.

Thursday, the after school program will meet as usual ...... but next week is
school vacation week, and we will NOT meet on 2/24.
However, Friday Storytime continues at 10 am .......... preschoolers on
vacation are welcome to join us!

Thursday, Feb. 24, the book group meets at 1 pm to discuss the book "Decline
and Fall" by Evely Waugh. There's still plenty of time to read it and join in.

A new rotation of LUV audiobooks and DVD's arrived last week.

As many of you know, the IRS is not mailing out tax forms this year. We can
download and print forms here, and we have just ordered few instruction
booklets. Hopefully, they will arrive soon.

make it to our workshops, we now have a brochure to guide you through the

The library will be open on Monday, Martin Luther King Day.
We have a number of interesting books that reflect on MLK and his legacy.

Also on Monday, 6:30pm: Downloadable Workshop!
Learn about audiobook and ebook downloadables that are available for free

There will be no children's programs this week or next. We'll continue the
first week in January, 2011!
However, we welcome all young readers to visit the library and explore our
collection, during their school vacation week.

The library will be open regular hours ( Mon. 1 - 8; Weds. 2 - 5; Thurs. 10 -
5) except closed on Saturday, Dec. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 1 (Saturday, Jan. 8, will return to regular 9 -12)

will focus on cards and decorations for the season. We welcome the decorations
children have made for the miniature tree that Christine Bartlett brought in
for the library.

Library Notes--December 6

Thanks to everyone who contributed to and stopped in and shopped/bid/bought
raffle tickets at the Holiday Sale on Saturday. The sale was a great success, and an enormous help to the library.
Special thanks to Moe Wilson and the Friends of the Morrill Library for
coordinating this annual event.
There are some paperwhites (about to bloom) still for sale at the library, and
about 20 wreaths left (on Linehan's porch) ---- they are $15.

Events at the Morrill/late November-early December 2010

Due to the holiday, there will be no children's programs this week.
They will resume next week: on Thursday, December 2; and Friday, December 3. 
Our After School Fun at the Library programs will continue in December, Thursdays from 3:15-4:30.  Children may take the bus from Newton School to the library, please send a note in to school with your child.  A peanut-free snack is served.
