Minutes of Trustees November Meeting

November 18, 2015

Minutes, November 9, 2015

Present: Curt Albee, Cindy Binzen, Rachel Kurland, Carol Wilson, Miriam Newman, Marty Frank

Minutes from the October meeting were adopted.

Librarian’s Report:

Cindy delivered Rebecca’s report, which noted that an organizational meeting would be held the next day for 6th- through 8th-grade reading group (perhaps extending down to include 5th-graders). Also scheduled is a reading by Vermont poet and essayist Sydney Lea.

Rachel gave the treasurer’s report. Our budget is holding up, with virtually all categories close to the previous year’s, with the exception of grant revenue. Next year’s budget will be worked out in December.

Curt has conferred with Eli Mintz about the possible removal of the remaining spruce tree in front. Eli didn’t give a firm quote, but indicated it would be close to $2,000 to remove the tree and grind the stump.

Rachel and Rebecca will meet with people from the state to review the list that’s been compiled of items that belong to the library but are being kept at the Morrill Homestead. They will also go over the proposed loan agreement that will allow the state to continue to display those items at the homestead. The state will help locate the tribe that might be the rightful owner of the Indian artifacts included in the collection. Miriam will review the agreement and the board will consider it at the next meeting.

Steve Handy said he will shovel snow and otherwise keep our paths clear when Mark Chute is out of the area. Terry Garrison has agreed to make the necessary repairs to the windowsill, and a furnace cleaning has been scheduled for Nov. 16 at which time a programmable thermostat will be installed.

Rachel reported that her friend who does art restoration has agreed to take a look at the portrait of Justin Morrill and tell us what it needs. His labor would be free, and we would be responsible for the cost of shipping (he has $50,000 worth of insurance) and materials. The board thought it was a great opportunity that should be pursued.

Next meeting will be Dec. 14.
